A Kiln Opening is probably the most exciting event for both potters and pottery collectors. This tradition started when wood-burning kilns were used exclusively. These very large kilns would accommodate from 150 to 400 pieces of pottery and would be fired only a few times a year. Unlike most studio potters, they depended upon periodic kiln openings and outdoor pottery sales rather than having showrooms or galleries open to the public. Today, potters do not only use wood fired kilns, but gas and electricity, which can be fired more often allowing potters to keep their showrooms full throughout the year. So no matter how the pottery is fired, potters use the tradition of a kiln opening to announce having lots of new pottery available for sale. Come find your next collection of pottery.

CADY CLAY WORKS - SEAGROVE POTTERS FOR PEACE
Dates Of This Event:
8/14/2010 - 11/14/2010

"Education is the long-term solution to fanaticism." - Col. Christopher Kolenda, US Army

John and Beth will join 23 other Seagrove Area Potteries in this fundraiser for Greg Mortenson's Central Asia Institute, which builds schools in remote, impoverished areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan, at the invitation of local leaders, as a long-term solution to terrorism. The US military has recognized these efforts as a crucial part of their over-all strategy to stabilize these areas. Mortenson, best-selling author of "Three Cups of Tea" and "Stones Into Schools" and himself a veteran, has been invited to the Pentagon in an advisory capacity.

Each pottery will create special vessels signed for this event, and donate 50% of the sales price to CAI. Our 2009 fundraiser, in which 13 potteries participated, raised nearly $5000!

Cady Clay Works will make 100 specially-designed tumblers for this event. We will also have copies of Mortenson's books for sale.

The pottery will be for sale at the individual shops starting August 14. A list of participating potteries is available at www.seagrovepottersforpeace.com.

These one-of-a-kind, collectible pottery pieces make a thoughtful gift that "gives twice"! Consider a Seagrove Potters for Peace vessel for your Christmas list.

Visit them at their Bulldog Pottery studio, 5 miles south of the town of Seagrove, NC on Business 220 for lively conversation about their recent work and refreshments. To find out about their most recent happenings in their studio follow their blog at “Around and About with Bulldog Pottery” www.bulldogpottery.blogspot.com

Bruce Gholson and Samantha Henneke’s studio is a collaborative environment that provides them with support to express themselves as individuals; more than, they could achieve singularly. They brainstorm for ideas by formulating and testing clays, glazes, surface treatments, and playing off of each other’s intuition about the materials and processes. Bruce Gholson has been fascinated with fossils, reptiles and insects since childhood. Recent interests have included fossilization in amber, Chinese scholar stones, and arrowheads from the region. Samantha Henneke is inspired by the interplay between plant, insect and animal life forms, colors, textures, and shapes of vegetables and fruits.
