A Kiln Opening is probably the most exciting event for both potters and pottery collectors. This tradition started when wood-burning kilns were used exclusively. These very large kilns would accommodate from 150 to 400 pieces of pottery and would be fired only a few times a year. Unlike most studio potters, they depended upon periodic kiln openings and outdoor pottery sales rather than having showrooms or galleries open to the public. Today, potters do not only use wood fired kilns, but gas and electricity, which can be fired more often allowing potters to keep their showrooms full throughout the year. So no matter how the pottery is fired, potters use the tradition of a kiln opening to announce having lots of new pottery available for sale. Come find your next collection of pottery.

Dates Of This Event:
9/20/2008 - 8/20/2008

Join us Saturday, September 20th, as Westmoore Pottery hosts those who reenact our past history.

Those who are not familiar with the world of reenactment (and those who are, and enjoy it!) will want to come and mingle with the 2nd NC Regiment of the Continental Line. The folks who portray the 2nd NC Regiment will set up an encampment beside Westmoore Pottery, and will be there from 9 am - 5 pm that day, showing the life of the 18th century soldiers and followers.

Also,in the afternoon, Jim Daniel will visit Westmoore Pottery in the persona of an 18th century North Carolina surveyor for Lord Granville. From 2 pm - 3 pm (weather permitting), Jim will present an hour long first person program in the character of the surveyor. He will explain to visitors what would have been involved in receiving land in central North Carolina in the mid to late 1700s. Jim spent over 10 years researching 18th century surveying, has written a book on the subject, and has performed this same hour long program at sites such as Williamsburg and Mount Vernon. After the program, Jim will be signing (and selling) his book on 18th century surveying.

And, as thanks to all of you who are yourselves reenactors, all reenactors of any part of the time period 1600-1850 who visit Westmoore Pottery on this day and wear period clothing will receive a discount for the day on anything purchased from us.
