Terry and Anna King are life long residents of the Seagrove area. While young they began a relationship with the late Dorothy and Walter Auman, owners of the original Seagrove Pottery, and consequently developed an interest in clay. The Auman's invited Terry and Anna to work with them and encouraged the King's to focus on the traditions of making face jugs and salt-glazed wares.
While working for Dot and Walter, the King's were instructed in most of the tasks required to run and maintain a true southern, traditional, production pottery. Their duties included mixing clay and glazes, turning and glazing pots, and loading kilns. It was during their two-year internship that they developed an intense love for folkart. In 1987, Terry and Anna opened their first pottery on the site of the old Joe Owen Pottery, and have since relocated their studio just off of Business Hwy 220 closer to their home.
The King's type of pottery is formed in the tradional Seagrove style. They often employ salt-glazes, typical of this area, and when they do, they use a groundhog wood-burning kiln. Just recently they have started using clay dug from a pond on their property. Although the King's use their creativity to produce functional, everyday pottery, their true talents emerge when they direct their hands, minds, and hearts toward sculptural, folk pottery.
Today the King's continue the Seagrove tradition and are most recognised for their face jugs, wood-fired salt-glazed work, grape and dogwood vases, and a functional line of pottery with an array of color combinations.
