Judy is the only potter / artist at Freeman Pottery. She went to take a painting class and ended up in a Pottery class.
In 1987, she opened the shop full time in a family farm house, where her family had farmed for 4 generations. The would be 5th generation farmer now does farm scenes on functional pottery. Each piece is hand – turned and decorated in a technique called sgraffito. Which means the application of one color clay over another and carved through? The scenes are of trees, fences, barns, log cabins, outhouses, and country churches. They are mostly done in snow and fall scenes. The scenes bring her family history into her pottery.
Besides the functional theme, is an extremely large selection of hand – turned miniatures ½ inch to 2 ½ inches in size. Too many shapes, sizes and glaze colors to name.
In early 2005, she woke up with the idea for a Vezzel Puzzle. It is pottery that only fits on a tray one way. They come with different numbers of pieces and sizes. An aerial photo comes with each one, so you can cheat to put it back together.
The top two gallery photos are the Vezzel Puzzles.
